Man charged with murder following double homicide in Rome

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man accused of stabbing two people to death in Rome, has been arraigned.

Aaron Welch of Schenectady plead not guilty in court.

Welch is accused of stabbing Stephanie I. Morrison, 22, of Rome and Shawn P. Kessler, 31, of Camden at the Myrtle Street residence where Morrison lived. Police say they found Morrison dead at the scene inside the house, but Kessler was alive when they arrived and was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. Kessler later died from his injuries.

His arraignment was held a week after the double homicide because Welch was being treated at a Syracuse hospital for what police say may have been self inflicted wounds.

Welch had stitches lined across his neck and his left hand bandaged up.

Oneida County Assistant District Attorney Todd Carville says this is only the beginning.

"That's the first step if the court finds reasonable cause then the matter will be held over for a grand jury presentation."
