Additional victim surfaces in rape case of Vernon man

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Vernon man has been charged with rape for the second time in about a week after authorities say a second victim surfaced. The first case stems from an alleged rape of an underage female he met online.

According to the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center, Ryan J. Whitman, 28, of Vernon, has again been charged with first-degree rape. He was arraigned in Rome City Court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail.

Police say the second incident happened on August 29.

In the charges filed last week, authorities say Whitman met the underage girl online via a social networking site.

That investigation is being turned over to the Oneida County District Attorney's Office for Grand Jury action and the victim has been offered counseling through the Child Advocacy Center.
