Father charged with murder in shooting death of son
WATSON, N.Y. (WKTV) - An argument between a father and son in the town of Watson in rural Lewis County Monday night ended with the death of 29-year-old Lyle Devoy, Jr. and the arrest of his father, 56-year-old Lyle Devoy, Sr., for murder. Officials with the Lewis County Sheriff's Department believe the elder Devoy fired a single, fatal, shot from a 20-gauge rifle at his son. The shooting happened just before 8:00 Monday night on Stillwater Road in Watson. It happened in the area of 9520 and 9516 Stillwater, but officials wouldn't say exactly where. They say the younger Devoy was unarmed. Police would not say what the two were arguing about, but assure area residents that the tragedy began and ended on Stillwater Road. "It was an incident between a father and son. The father has been arrested. There's obviously no reason to believe this involved any other citizens of our community," says Lewis County District Attorney Leanne Moser. The county undersheriff says that neighbors disregarded their own safety during a live shooting in order to try and save the victim. "Yes the neighbors did get involved. They made the initial 911 call to the center and they actually tried to assist Mr. Devoy junior," says Lewis County Undersheriff Jim Monnat. Such violence is rare in Lewis County; this was the county's fourth homicide in 18 years. Lyle Devoy, Sr. is in the Lewis County Correctional Facility. He's due in court for a felony hearing on Friday. Davoy, Sr., is charged with Murder, 2nd degree. He's being held at the Lewis County Jail without bail. Sheriff's deputies were assisted on the scene by the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit, the Lewis County District Attorney's Office, and Lewis County Search and Rescue.
