July trial date sent for Utica man accused of animal cruelty

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man accused of leaving several dogs in deplorable conditions in the City of Utica returned to court on Tuesday.

Umar Aziz now faces a July 18 trial date on several animal cruelty charges. Police say they found a total of eight dogs in his Whitesboro Street apartment, six of which ended up dying.

Police say the conditions at his apartment were so deplorable that the dogs were eating shoe leather in an attempt to survive.

Last month, the Oneida County District Attorney's Office offered Aziz nine months in jail - and offer he refused.

He isn't facing any more jail time if found guilty.
