Man accused of smuggling drugs into jail during a weekend sentence

WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - A City of Oneida man serving weekends in jail for an attempted assault charge is now facing new charges after authorities say he tried to smuggle drugs into the jail.

Robert W. Hartwell IV, 26, of Oneida has been charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree promoting prison contraband, and tampering with physical evidence.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Hartwell is serving an intermittent sentence of 120 days in the Madison County Correctional Facility in Wampsville for an attempted assaulted charge. Authorities say on February 9, Corrections Officers saw him attempting to take pills that they say he brought into the facility by concealing the pills in a balloon inside a body cavity.

Hartwell is due in Oneida City Court on these new charges on Friday, February 5.
