October ATV stop in Lewis County leads to recent arrest for burglaries
COPENHAGEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Authorities say the stop of a man riding an ATV in Lewis County back in October has not only led them recently to discover the ATV was stolen, but that the man and others were connected to a series of burglaries in October.
According to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office, Richard Reinhardt II, 22, of Fort Drum was stopped by deputies on October 26, 2012 around 10:26 p.m. in the Town of Copenhagen for not wearing a helmet.
During the stop, authorities say Reinhardt could not provide documentation of ownership of the ATV and it was towed.
Investigators later learned that the ATV had been stolen from a storage unit in Evans Mills earlier in October and that Reinhardt and others were believed to have been involved in burglaries to various storage units in Jefferson and Lewis Counties. Sheriff's Officials say New York State Police are handling the burglary cases.
Reinhardt had been charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, operating an ATV without a helmet, and unregistered operation of an ATV.
He was arraigned in the Town of Denmark Court on Wednesday and is currently in the Jefferson County Jail where is awaiting further court proceedings for the burglaries of the storage units.
