FRANKFORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Frankfort couple is facing numerous animal cruelty charges after authorities say the dogs were found running loose in the front yard without leashes and living inside the home in deplorable conditions.

On Thursday, October 4, Town of Frankfort Police Officers responded to a complaint of dogs running at large at a home in the 200 block of Ferguson Road in the Town of Frankfort. Upon their arrival, they saw several dogs in the front yard that were not on leashes. Police said attempts where made to make contact with the owners at the residence, but that no one was home.

The officers located a door that was left open to lo let the dogs run in and out of the house into a small fenced in yard. When the officers looked inside of the home, they said they saw that the living conditions of the home were unfit for the dogs, with boxes, trash and a large amount of feces seen throughout the residence.

With the help of the Herkimer County Humane Society, the dogs were rounded up and brought to the shelter where they were examined by a veterinarian.

After an investigation, John Amado, 66, and Susan Amado, 63, of the residence were both charged with seven counts of torture or injuring animals / failure to provide sustenance, four counts of dog at large without collar / tags and five counts of dog at large per Frankfort Town Codes.
