Police arrest two teens in Amsterdam factory fire
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (WKTV) - Amsterdam Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with the fire that destroyed a former Mohawk Valley brush factory.
Authorities said two teens - a 13 year old male and 15 year old male, both from Amsterdam - set fire in the building and left it. The teens told police they had tried to put out the fire and were unsuccessful, leaving it in the building to burn out. The fire grew and erupted around midnight on Wednesday July 15 at the former Eddie Brush Co. factory.
Authorities say the fire burned for more than a day, with sections of the brick building collapsing onto a street Wednesday morning. Several nearby houses were heavily damaged and about 50 residents had to be evacuated because of the intense heat from the fire.
No one was injured. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion.
The building was seized earlier this year by the city for non-payment of taxes. Hundreds of thousands of books owned by a former bookseller were stored inside.
The teens - whose identities were not released due to their age, have been charged with a criminal mischief, criminal trespass, and fourth-degree arson, which is a felony.
They will answer the charges in Montgomery County Family Court.
