Rape sentence delayed for the Ilion man known as "Harry Potter"

By PAT BAILEY

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Jeremy Snyder, 27 of Ilion, will have to wait until Friday to find out how long he will go to prison for.

Snyder, whose known alias is "harry Potter," after the literary and movie character, was recently found guilty by a jury of first and second degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child, this after he had sex with a 13 year-old girl.

The sentence for those convictions is 25 years in prison. However, because he was already convicted of prior sexual abuse crimes, Assistant District Attorney Scott Klosner asked that Snyder be sentenced as a "persistent violent felon".

That sentence could mean Snyder goes to prison for life.

The request means the Klosner would have to prove Snyder was already convicted of prior felonies.

The request also means that Snyder's attorney, Norman Mastromoro, has time to challenge. Herkimer County Court Judge Patrick Kirk gave Mastromoro until Friday, when Snyder will be sentenced.

"He (Snyder) served his time on the prior sex abuse conviction, he violated parole three or four times, and then this happened." said Klosner. "Based on his prior record, that is why I am seeking the life sentence."
