Son of school bus driver sentenced for rape of underage girl from father's bus route

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The son of a former Holland Patent school bus driver has been sentenced for the rape of a 16 year old girl who he was allegedly introduced to by his father.

Michael Newland Jr., 23, of Cold Brook, will spend the next six months in jail, with eight years probation after being sentenced in Oneida County Court Tuesday morning. He will also have to register as a Level One sex offender.

Newland Jr. pleaded guilty to rape with the underage girl back in October.

His father, Michael Newland Sr., is facing a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, accused of driving the underage girl on the bus to meet his son after school.

Newland Sr. also faces unrelated charges of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child in Herkimer County. It is alleged that he had sexual contact with an underage Holland Patent student with whom he road his bus to and from school several times in 2009.
