Authorities investigate attempted burglary at New Woodstock Post Office

NEW WOODSTOCK, N.Y. - Madison County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating an attempted burglary at the United States Post Office located on School Street in New Woodstock.

The Postmaster of the New Woodstock Post Office notified the Madison County 911 Center at 7:30 on Tuesday morning to report the building was broken into. Deputies arrived and determined that forced entry was made to the building. Other details are not being made available at this time due to the
ongoing nature of this investigation.

Madison County Sheriff's Deputies, Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians, as well as the U.S. Postal Inspector's from Syracuse are continuing their efforts throughout this morning which have included several staff and neighborhood interviews, photographing the scene and concentrating on several areas for fingerprints.

Inventory and review for possible missing items is being conducted by the U.S. Post Office
employees at the location.

There have been other burglaries in recent days in various areas of Madison County however they don't appear to be related to this most recent attempt.

Sheriff Allen Riley is asking the public to be vigilant to this issue and to be attentive to securing homes and businesses, at all times, including the use of door and window locks, alarm systems activated (if installed), securing of valuables in a locked safe or off premise in a safety deposit box at your local financial institution.

Outdoor equipment should be kept locked in a garage or shed if not in use. If you are leaving the area for an extended period of time, you can notify the Office of the Madison County Sheriff through and click on "Property Check Request" - Sheriff's patrol will do cursory checks on your property during your absence.
