Authorities investigating death of man following altercation at Chenango County tavern

SMITHVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 31 year old man from the Town of Smithville who they say was involved in a fight at a tavern and later died at his home.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, Chance E. Howey, 31, of Smithville, was involved in a physical altercation at Seeber's Tavern on State Route 41 in Smithville Flats early Sunday morning.

After the altercation, Howey was taken back to his residence, the Sheriff's Office reports.

At roughly 1 p.m. Sunday, family members called 911 to report that Howey was unconscious. He was transported to Wilson Hospital by the Greene Ambulance. Howey was pronounced dead early Monday morning.

An autopsy will be conducted at Upstate medical Center in Syracuse on February 1.
