HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty after police say he injured his girlfriend's puppy after the dog made a mess in the apartment.

According to Herkimer Police, a young woman brought her injured, 6 month old puppy named Midnight to the police station looking for help. Police said the Herkimer Dog Control officer responded and then took the dog to the Herkimer Veterinary Association where the dog was treated for a contusion above its eye, a broken leg and several broken ribs.

Police said they learned that the owner's boyfriend, Matthew G. Shephard, 24, had punished the dog for making a mess in the North Main Street apartment.

Shephard has been charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, was arraigned in Herkimer Court and sent to the Herkimer County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash and $15,000 bond.

Police said Midnight is still being treated at the veterinarians, but is said to be in good condition.
