Two charged in unrelated welfare fraud cases

HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two women are facing charges in unrelated cases of welfare fraud, according to the Herkimer County Sheriff's Office.

Jennifer M. Kobus, 27, of Frankfort was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Kobus failed to report all household income which included unemployment benefits and daycare wages she was receiving while collecting welfare benefits totaling $1,456. Kobus was processed and released with appearance ticket returnable to Herkimer Village Court.

Denise R. Smith, 20, of Herkimer was charged with fifth-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Authorities said Smith was previously disqualified from receiving welfare benefits and failed to indicate that on application. She was processed and released on appearance ticket returnable to Herkimer Village Court.
