Suspect in weekend shooting no stranger to police

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A 22-year-old Utica man has been arrested and charged following a weekend shooting in the city.

Utica police said Pernell Flanders has been charged with several crimes, including attempted murder. They said he is connected to the shooting of John Thorington, 26, of Utica on Saturday.

Police responded to the area of Brinckerhoff Avenue and Leah Street on Saturday night for a shooting. They said they found Thorington with multiple gun shot wounds to his jaw, neck, shoulder and legs.

Flanders has also been charged with criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment.

It is certainly not Flanders' first run-in with the law. In 2008, he faced charges after police said he fired shots in the parking lot of the former Backstreets Brewing Company in Utica, before a car chase that ended with his car driven into the North Country Books building on Lafayette Street.

Flanders was also charged in 2009 with criminal possession of a weapon.
