ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - An Ilion man was taken to the hospital for lacerations to his hand and a mental health evaluation following a standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies at his home Friday night.

According to the Ilion Police Department, firefighters arrived at a home on 60 Grove Street in Ilion around 9:53 p.m. Friday for a report of an unattended fire in the backyard. When firefighters got to the scene, they were confronted by a man who became angry and hostile over their presence at his home.

The Ilion Police Department then responded to the scene, when they say the man became highly agitated and irate towards the officers. Police say the man wanted the officers to draw their weapons and come after him inside the home. The man sustained injuries to his hand at this point after he intentionally punched a glass window, authorities said, adding that he made several comments indicating that he appeared to be a danger to himself and others.

Authorities say the man then barricaded himself inside the home and disconnected the power to the home, refusing to come outside or cooperate with law enforcement.

After several attempts to contact the subject via phone were unsuccessful, the Ilion Police Department Special Response Team was contacted and responded to the scene. Additional law enforcement officers from the Herkimer Police Department Special Response Team Town of Frankfort Police Department, Village of Mohawk Police Department, New York State Police, Village of Frankfort Police Department and the City of Little Falls Police Department assisted at the scene.

Police say they made contact with the man through use of the Ilion Police Department's armored vehicle and PA system, initiating negotiations with the man and got him to peacefully surrender himself. Around 1:47 a.m. On Saturday, the man was taken into custody and later transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for treatment of lacerations to his hand and a mental health evaluation.

Authorities said two firearms, ammunition and several knives were later located inside the home.

Mental health laws prevent police from releasing the man's name.
