DERUYTER, N.Y. (WKTV) - An investigation is underway after an apparent murder-suicide in the Madison County Village of DeRuyter.

According to New York State Police, troopers were called around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday to check on the welfare of a woman at a residence on Seminary Street in DeRuyter.

When troopers arrived at 1599 Seminary Street, they were met by a family member who told them that Michele J. Green, 48, didn't show up to work Sunday morning and the relative was not able to contact her via phone. The family member asked troopers to force their way into the Green residence.

Prying open a rear door of the home, authorities say they saw Edward G. Green, 48, with a shotgun in his hand, standing in the kitchen. Troopers say they immediately exited the house and cleared family and friends from the area and set up a perimeter.

Shortly after that, they heard a gunshot.

At 4:30 a.m., the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team (SORT) gained entry into the residence and discovered the bodies of Michelle and Edward Green deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

Authorities say the investigation is continuing.
