Rome man sentenced for negligent homicide of roommate

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A City of Rome man will spend 1 1/2 to 3 years in State Prison for the criminally negligent homicide of his roommate back in March.

Nathaniel Ephriam, 57, of Rome, had gotten into a fight with roommate Freddie Knight, with Knight cutting Ephriam and Ephriam, in turn, punching Knight in the mouth. Neither of the men sought medical treatment at the time of the incident and it wasn't until a few days later that Knight became sick from a brain Hemorrhage and ultimately died at University Hospital in Syracuse.

Ephriam pleaded guilty in October to the charge of criminally negligent homicide in Oneida County Court in Utica, with the court accepting that Ephriam did not intend to kill, or even seriously injure, Knight.
