NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Police say that tips from the public helped them identify a larceny suspect from Kohl's Department store.

On March 11, the New Hartford Police placed a picture on Facebook attempting to identify a male involved in a larceny at Kohl's and received numerous calls for identifying him.

On March 15, police arrested Steven M. Benoit, 30 of Rome with the assistance of the Utica Police Department.

According to police, on February 27 security at Kohl's observed Benoit and another male steal a leather coat and a pair of sneakers but fled the store before being apprehended. Shortly after the theft, police were able to identify the second male as Richard Brown, 35 of Utica. Police said Brown was eventually arrested on March 1.

Both Brown and Benoit were issued appearance tickets and are due in the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.

Police say they would like to thank everyone that called to assist with identifying Benoit.
