Cooperstown shooter formally arraigned while in hospital
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - The teenager accused of chasing another teen down Cooperstown's Main Street and into the police station where he shot him and then turned the gun on himself, has been officially charged with the crime.
The Otsego County District Attorney John M. Muehl, Otsego County Sheriff Richard J. Devlin Jr, and Cooperstown Police chief Diana Nicols announce that on Friday, April 9, 2010 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, Anthony Nicholas J. Pacherille, who remained hospitalized after last Friday's shooting, had been officially arraigned.
Pacherille, a Cooperstown High School Student is now charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment - all felonies.
According to Otsego County District Attorney John Muehl, Anthony Pacherille, 16, shot Wesley Lippitt, 16 with a .22 caliber rifle on Friday, April 2, 2010 inside the Cooperstown Police Station.
Chief Nicols said Pacherille, armed with the rifle got out of a vehicle which had crashed into the iron gates near the Cooperstown Hall of and chased Lippitt from the corner of Main and Fair Street to the front of the Main Street Police Station.
Police Chief Nicols said Lippitt ran into the police station and was attempting to hide from Pacherille. Lippitt was then shot in the arm by the teen wielding the gun.
An officer who happened to be in the station to fill out paperwork, pulled his gun and ordered Pacherille to drop his weapon, at which point the shooter than turned the gun on himself.
Pacherille was arraigned at 2:35 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2010 at Bassett Healthcare by Town Justice James F. Wolff of the Otsego Town Court and was sent without bail to the custody of the Otsego County Sheriff.
The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Cooperstown Police Department. Sheriff's Office Criminal investigation Division and The Otsego County District Attorney's Office.
