Authorities: "major heroin dealer" charged in Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - An Oneonta man who authorities refer to as a "major heroin dealer" has been charged after authorities say they seized numerous amounts of heroin and marijuana at his residence. According to the Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Steven R. Belton, 43, of Oneonta has been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana and criminally using drug paraphernalia. Authorities say a narcotics search warrant was executed at Belton's Chestnut Street home on Tuesday, December 4 following a one-month investigation. Sheriff's Deputies, K-9 units and investigators, Oneonta Police detectives, Investigators with the District Attorney's Office and Otsego County Probation Officers executed the warrant and seized 40 packets of heroin and 40 grams of marijuana from the residence. Authorities say the heroin was valued at $800 while the marijuana was valued at $400. Investigators say they all seized three electronic digital scales and $14,070 in cash. Belton was arraigned Wednesday morning and sent to the Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail due to two previous felony-level criminal sale of a controlled substance charges. He faces up to 15 years to life in prison if prosecuted as a persistent felony offender.
