Oneonta Police force to begin carrying tasers

ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Oneonta Police Department will soon go through a new type of training after the city council voted Tuesday night to approve the use of tasers.

Interim Police Chief Gary O'Neill says that his officers respond to many fights.

"This is one more, less than lethal tool they can use, instead of having to resort to a deadly force, like a handgun," O'Neill said.

The department is buying six tasers at $812 a piece. Along with holsters, that comes to a total of $5,600.

Tuesday night's vote was unanimous and training for the sergeants starts this spring. The tasers will be put in operation after that.
