MILFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two men are facing drug charges after authorities say they stopped them for trying to avoid a seat belt road check last month.

According to the Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Crispin Koren Jr, 27, of Westford was driving his vehicle northbound on State Route 28 in the Village of Milford on May 26 when he saw a Buckle Up New York road check and tried to avoid it by pulling into a parking lot without giving proper notice of signaling. Upon stopping Koren Jr's vehicle, authorities said numerous equipment violations were also observed.

David A. Barletta, 36, also of Westford, who was a passenger in the car, was found to be in possession of hypodermic needles, authorities said, adding that a search of the vehicle produced a small quantity of heroin hidden inside the vehicle.

The Otsego County Sheriff said a drug recognition examination was conducted of Joren Jr at the Otsego County Sheriff's Office and it was determined that he was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle and he was charged with DWAI drugs.

Both Barletta and Koren Jr were arrested for the heroin possession and Barletta was additionally charged with the hypodermic needle possession.

Both defendants were arraigned in the Town of Worcester Court and released on their own recognizance to re-appear at a later date. They each face up to a year in the Otsego County Jail if convicted.
