ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica man has been charged after police say he stole a purse from an elderly woman in the city of Rome. According to Rome Police, an officer was waved down by the woman around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, when she told them she had just had been robbed. She told police that a man had attacked her, knocked her to the ground and then stole her purse. A description of the suspect was broadcast and moments later, another officer spotted an individual matching the suspect description. The officer approached the individual, who then ran. Police say a brief foot chase ensued and the individual was caught by police near the rear of the Rome Police Station. Demitri J. Matthews, 19, of Utica has been charged with second-degree robbery and is being held in Rome Police lock-up pending arraignment in Utica City Court. Police say the victim suffered minor injuries and was treated by members of the Rome Fire Department and Amcare Ambulance Service.
