Police: Man charged with burglary after found climbing out of window, flees

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Middle Island man has been arrested and charged with third-degree burglary after police say he was captured fleeing a building early Friday morning.

According to Rome Police, at 3:07 a.m. on Friday, January 13, Officer John Reilly was patrolling on North Washington Street when he was flagged down by a pedestrian. The pedestrian advised Officer Reilly that he had heard the sound of breaking glass in the area.

Officer Reilly radioed for additional officers to respond to the area of North Washington Street and as Officer Thomas Riolo arrived, he saw a male climb out of a window at 301 North Washington Street. Officer Riolo gave chase and apprehended the suspect - Joseph T. Holmes, 59, of Middle Island - following a brief foot chase.

Police said that further investigation revealed that the Holmes had broken into a building located at 301 North Washington Street and removed a small amount of cash.

Holmes is currently being held in Rome Police lockup pending arraignment in City Court.
