UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A City of Rome man pleaded guilty in Oneida County Court on Wednesday morning in the criminally negligent homicide of his roommate back in March. Nathaniel Ephriam's attorney, Adam Tyksinski, says Ephriam and roommate Freddie Knight had gotten into a fight when Knight cut Ephriam, and Ephriam, in turn, punched Knight in the mouth. Neither of the men sought medical treatment at the time of the incident, and it wasn't until a few days later that Knight became sick from a brain hemorrhage and ultimately died at University Hospital in Syracuse. "My client has expressed grief, tremendously, throughout this whole thing," Tyksinski said. "He never wanted Mr. Knight to obviously pass away nor did he really even want to hurt him. I think he wanted to quiet him down and calm him down." Tyksinski says the court agreed to the plea deal and sentence of 1 1/3 to 3 years in prison, accepting that Ephriam did not intend to kill, or even seriously injure, Knight.
