Santoro sentenced for rape and escape charges

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man accused of raping a woman in the City of Rome, attempting to escape from jail, and making phone calls to the victim while an order of protection was in place, was sentenced Thursday in Oneida County Court.

John Santoro, 25, of Rome had previously entered a guilty plea to charges of rape, criminal contempt and escape. He was sentenced to 15 years in State Prison with 15 years Post Release Supervision and an Order of Protection on the Rape charge to run concurrent with 2 to 4 years in State Prison on a criminal contempt charge. Santoro was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in State Prison on the escape charge to run consecutive.

Often having to wear netting over his face during court appearances because of his tendency to spit at people, authorities said Santoro, while in the Oneida County Jail to face the rape charges, attempted to run off from a recreation area outside of the jail in October. He was free for roughly six to seven minutes, making it across the street before he was captured and taken back into custody.

His original charges stem from accusations that he held a woman captive and raping her in a Rome apartment. Authorities said an order of protection was in place following the charges for that incident, but while in custody, authorities said Santoro made phone calls to the woman, violating the order of protection.
