UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A former Utica school teacher was sentenced on Wednesday for stealing a gold necklace from a five year old student.

Crystal DeRosa, 33, pleaded guilty in April to charges of petit larceny and endangering the welfare of a child in Oneida County Court.

A Special Education Teacher at Columbus Elementary School in Utica, DeRosa was arrested in February following what the Utica City School District referred to as "a lengthy investigation" involving the school district, Utica Police and the Oneida County District Attorney's Office. It was alleged that DeRosa had stolen a gold chain from the neck of a five year old student at Columbus Elementary School in late October. School officials say DeRosa had been suspended since the beginning of the year, but she resigned shortly before entering her plea.

At her sentencing Wednesday in Oneida County Court, DeRosa was ordered under house arrest for the next two months and ordered to pay restitution.
