Man charged for public lewdness

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica man who police say failed to register as a sex offender has recently been arrested for public lewdness.

According to Utica Police, officers responded to an unnamed business on Oriskany Street regarding a report of a male exposing himself.

The officer spoke with a female, who said that she was leaving work, when she saw a man alongside the building. She told police she looked closely and saw that the man had his penis exposed and he was masturbating. She quickly got into her vehicle and police say the man continued masturbating while he was staring at her.

She was able to describe the man to officers and later identified him as Dewayne Denis, 32, of Utica.

An investigator with the sex offender unit noticed that the suspect was the same man that he had an open investigation for failing to register a change of address as a sex offender.

Denis has been charged with public lewdness and failing to notify of address change as a sex offender.

The UPD said they have been investigating several reports of the same man possibly committing similar acts in Utica, but it is possible that other victims have not contacted police.

If you had a similar crime committed against you recently, you are asked to contact the UPD at 315-735-3301.
