UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A New York State Trooper based out of Sylvan Beach who happened to be in the city of Utica on unrelated business, stopped a burglary of a GPS from inside a parked car, Utica Police said. On Thursday around 11:30 a.m., Utica Police officers responded to the area of Park Ave and Blandina Street regarding someone breaking into a car and stealing a GPS unit. When officers arrived they found that New York State Trooper Sgt. Thomas Haumann had a man in custody. Police say the Trooper, who is assigned to the Sylvan Beach barracks, was arriving at Oneida County Court for an unrelated matter when he was approached by a witness. The person told the Trooper that they just saw a man break a car window, and steal a GPS. Trooper Haumann located the man a short distance away and when he stopped the suspect, he found that he was in possession of the stolen item. The suspect, Rafael Vargas, 42, of Utica was turned over to the UPD and charged with third-degree criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.
