Utica man accused of sexually assaulting a minor

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica man has been charged with a charge of criminal sex act after authorities say he sexually assaulted a minor at the end of August.

According to Chief Dean Obernesser of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center, Darren Smith, 21, of Utica was arrested on September 7 and charged in relation to a sex assault that occurred in the city of Utica during the overnight h
ours between August 30 and August 31, 2012.

Smith was charged with first-degree criminal sex act following an investigation conducted by Utica Police Investigator Jeremy VanHorn, assigned to the Child Advocacy Center.

Smith was arraigned in Utica City Court on September 8, 2012 and remanded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

The investigation into the sexual assault continues. Smith's case has been turned over to the District Attorney's Office for Grand Jury action.

The victim has been offered counseling through the Child Advocacy Center.
