Dairy farmers rally over possible economic losses

WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Senator James Seward held a meeting Friday at Mount Markham Middle School in West Winfield to discuss pending dairy price legislation with dairy farmers.

The federal milk marketing improvement act of 2009 would change the way dairy prices are set. One of the local farmers who spoke at the meeting says the legislation would be a boon to dairy farmers and the the economy as a whole, "Anytime a farmer has money, it goes out into the economy. They spend, they fix, they replace. And that keeps other people working, so it's big...it's huge," says area farmer Gretchen Maine.

According to the agricultural interest group, "ProAg," the average dairy farmer stands to lose between $140 to $150,000 this year.
