Optima gas station in New Hartford closing permanently on Sunday

By WKTV News

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Optima gas station in Consumer Square in New Hartford will be closing its doors at the end of the week, and there is no clear word on what that means for the site it sits on.

Optima is located next to the Applebee's in the heart of Consumer Square, which houses numerous retail chains, including Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Staples, and more.

Signs were recently posted on the gas tanks that read "Dear Valued Customer: Effective August 12, 2012 the Optima gas station will be permanently closed."

The sign refers customers to John Steel for questions, but Steel said he could not comment to the media, and referred us to Sunoco Corporate Relations.

Tom Golembeski, of Sunoco, who handles the Optima brand for Wal-Mart stores, says that the decision to close the business came as part of the company's regular and ongoing evaluations of the performance of their 4,900 gas stations.

When asked if the closing of the site after these evaluations could be considered "economically motivated," Golembeski said it was "an internal financial decision."

What happens to the site is unknown to Golembeski, but he said whatever happens, it would not be a Sunoco or Optima gas station.
