Solar boat production officially begins at Rome company

By HILARY LANE

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company officially celebrated the production on its ten passenger solar boat "The Loon" on Tuesday.

It is the first of its kind, because the boat can be broken up into pieces and shipped all around the world.

Tamarack, which was originally based in Ontario, Canada, moved to the City of Rome about a year ago. Since then, the company has received over $300,000 dollars in business incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development to help their business.

The company spent the last year working on several prototypes before they arrived at their final creation, "The Loon," which uses all local products.

"We have used our funds almost exclusively in New York State in the sense of buying equipment locally, hiring locally and we have a good relationship with suppliers in Rome and Albany and we have been buying equipment to stimulate the local economy as well," said Montgomery Gisborne, Founder and President of Tamarack.

The boat is environmentally-friendly because it does not use any fossil fuels.

The company currently employs four local people but has plans to expand by the end of the year to 13 people.
