Local governments receive more than $300,000 to improve records managements

HERKIMER & OTSEGO COUNTIES (WKTV) - Local governments and community organizations have received more than $300,000 to use toward improvements to records managements systems, State Senator James Seward said.

“The grant funds allow local governments and community organizations to make needed upgrades so they can better serve the public,” said Senator Seward. “Local officials will now be able to improve their record storage, ensuring our history is well-preserved while enhancing public access to the vital information.”

Seward said the grant funds are from the New York State Archives Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (LGRMIF) which derives its revenue from a small percentage of the fees paid when people file or record documents with county clerks.

Chapter 78 of the laws of 1989 initially established this local assistance program. The LGRMIF was first extended in 1995 and made permanent in 2004.

“At a time when competition for grant dollars is fierce I am pleased to see so many local awards. Now local governments can make needed upgrades that will improve service and at the same time, keep property taxes in check,” Seward said.
