New York State egg production up six percent in May

NEW YORK STATE - Egg production on New York farms totaled 102 million eggs in May, up 6 percent from last year, according to King Whetstone, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office.

The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.09 million, increased 5 percent from May 2010 and the rate of lay was 2,496 eggs per 100 layers, up 1 percent from last year.

United States egg production totaled 7.78 billion during May 2011, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.67 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during May
2011 averaged 338 million, down slightly from last year. May egg production per 100 layers was 2,302 eggs, up 1 percent from May 2010.

United States egg-type chicks hatched during May 2011 totaled 43.3 million, up slightly from May 2010. Eggs in incubators totaled 37.6 million on June 1, 2011, down 2 percent from a year ago.
