Sauquoit Creek Pump Station upgrades given 2021 deadline

By NICOLE HART

SAUQUOIT, N.Y. (WKTV) - A project to get rid of overflow in the Sauquoit Creek Sewer Line has bought more time.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and Oneida County have reached an agreement to extend the deadline to 2021 for upgrades to the Sauquoit Creek Pump Station.

The problem occurs during wet weather events like snow melt and rain, which generate more waste water than the plant can handle.

The current system releases waste water into various bodies of water, which then release it into the Mohawk River.

"It's also a quality of life issue," said Judy Drabicki, Regional Director of the DEC's Region 6. "People want to live here, they want a river that's clean. I really congratulate the county for stepping up to the plate and taking on this tremendous burden."

The treatment capacity of the district's water pollution control plant is approximately 50 million gallons per day.
