Small Business Week coming to Herkimer County

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Small Business Week in Herkimer County is fast approaching and on Tuesday, Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Vincent Bono presented a proclamation in support of Small Business Week to the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce.

Herkimer County Administrator Jim Wallace said that Small Business Week is important because "small businesses drive the train."

According to the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director John Scarano, 99 percent of businesses in Herkimer County are considered small businesses and Small Business Week is meant as a way to give back to them for all they do.

"These are the people that support our communities," Scarano said. "They pay the school taxes, county taxes, they create jobs in the summer for our youth. They are here for us, support our chamber of commerce. Many of these small businesses are members of our chamber. The chamber recognizes, along with the county, that at least one week a year, we need to support these people by getting the word out to shop local."

Each day from May 19 through May 25 will have a special meaning to tie into the overall theme of Small Business Week, Scarano said.

May 20 will be "Main Street Monday" in support of shopping locally, with deals at local shops which are expected to be announced soon.

May 21 will be "Tidy-up Tuesday" with DeClutter Coach Deb Cabral speaking at Herkimer County Community College at 8:30 am to talk about decluttering your workspace.

May 22 will be "Wine and Dine Wednesday" in support of local restaurants, with deals at various restaurants to be announced soon.

May 23 will be "Thank you Thursday," with a reception held at Herkimer County Community College.

May 24 will be "Fun Friday," where you can stop in the Chamber office and recap on the week's events.

The hope is to expand Small Business Week and get more businesses and people involved to make it an annual event.

If businesses still want to get involved, they can contact the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce at (315) 866-7820.

Your business must provide the Chamber with a special or discount for the week. The business will also get a poster which will be delivered and displayed in the store inviting shoppers into your business. Businesses wishing to take part are also asked to try to attend one of the events May 20-24 for free networking and marketing, along with keeping people informed on your offer.
