Voters hit the polls on Richfield Springs school improvements

By HILARY LANE

RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Residents in Richfield Springs hit the polls on Thursday to vote on a $3.1 million proposition for maintenance and building repairs.

The school district hired an independent architecture firm through BOCES earlier this year to complete a study on necessary improvements to the school building. Those repairs include roofing and electrical repair, transitioning the building to wireless internet, and enlarging lockers.

"The assets we have here in the building total around 17 million dollars," says Robert Baracco, Superintendent of schools. "It would be irresponsible not to maintain a 17 million dollar program and in some ways let that deteriorate and not maintain it over time."

Here is a rundown of how the projects will be funded:

*Total costs - $3,165,000
*State aid will cover 82% of the project - $ 2,245,113
*The remaining money will come from the capital reserve - $900,000

Baracco says the projects will have zero impact on residents' taxes.

The polls are open at Richfield Springs Central School until 7 p.m. on Thursday.
