Scrap yards scramble to meet clunkers deadline

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Cash for Clunkers program wrapped up a few months ago, but where did all those old cars go?

They went to scrap yards and car recyclers around the country.

The program was a big hit for people looking to unload their old gas guzzlers, but it hasn't been a big money maker for everyone. Cash for Clunkers has left car recyclers in a crunch. Thousands of cars are sitting in scrap yards, such as the 300 of them at Bob's Barn's Ave. Auto Parts Inc. in Utica.

Bob Siemski, owner of Bob's Barn's Ave. Auto Parts Inc. and other scrap dealers, are scrambling to strip the clunkers of salvageable parts - and they're running out of time.

Under the Cash for Clunkers program, the cars are required to be crushed within six months of the date the vehicle is transferred from the dealership. Siemski only has a few months to strip all 300 cars, and whatever he doesn't get to, will go from clunk to junk.

The American Recycler's Association met with the Transportation Department in late September seeking an additional six months to recycle the cars.
