Seneca Falls voters to decide village's fate
SENECA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - The upstate New York village that's
hallowed ground for the women's rights movement and claims to be the inspiration for Bedford Falls in "It's A Wonderful Life" could fade into history. Voters in Seneca Falls will decide next week whether the village should be absorbed into the town of Seneca Falls, a move supporters say will eliminate a layer of government and reduce taxes. The Finger Lakes village is where the first documented women's rights convention was held in 1848. It's home to the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Women's Rights National Historic Park. The village 35 miles west of Syracuse also claims to have inspired director Frank Capra's Bedford Falls, the mythical upstate town that served as the setting for his 1946 Christmas classic starring Jimmy Stewart.
