New guidelines for local contractors mean new certification or heavy fines
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A big concern for local contractors is paying the bills if they are fined by the federal government.
An eight-hour class was held at Jay-K Lumber on Thursday to teach painters and contractors about the dangers of lead. Under federal law, all contractors must be certified by April 22, and that is where the dollars are adding up. In addition to taking a class, the business the contractors work for must apply for certification - meaning $300 right there. However, the Central New York Environmental Institute said they believe it's worth the cost in the long run. "It's a big deal," said Pat Strodel of the CNY Environmental Institute. "Anyone after the date that is not certified and working for a certified firm is subject to penalties of $37,500 per violation, per day." If you're a painter or contractor and need more information, you can call 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to the Central New York Environmental Institute's website. |
