Expansion of former Carousel Mall could mean many new jobs for the region

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Destiny USA, formerly known as Carousel Mall, is expanding and rebranding.

After the grand opening for the 1.3 million square foot expansion in August, Travel and Leisure Magazine has projected that Destiny USA will be the second most visited retail destination in the country after the Mall of America.

100 new brands are coming to Syracuse, including retail stores, entertainment establishments, and restaurants.

Some of the big headliners coming include Michael Kors, Mark Echo, Saks Off 5th, new Imax screens, Toby Keith's I Love this Bar and Grill, P.F. Changs, Funny Bone Comedy Club, and Pole Position Raceway.

The construction and the new retail outlets are expected to bring close to 2,000 jobs to the area.

"So there is a lot of opportunity with economic impact locally with job creation and economic development and attracting visitors from outside this region from Pennsylvania and from the Albany area, New York State, West of Buffalo, and the Canada area," said Sara Wallace, head of public relations at Destiny USA.

Representatives from Oneida County Tourism said they expect this new expansion to bring more people and more dollars to this local area.

"Bringing people from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, NYC, and as they are on their way to Destiny USA, they are passing right by Utica, and we have wonderful entertainment options and dining options that they can incorporate into their package," said Kelly Blazosky, President of Oneida County Tourism.
