F.X. Matt Brewery now turning wastewater into energy

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Dozens of local lawmakers, business leaders, and residents gathered at the F.X. Matt Brewery in Utica on Tuesday to take a look at the latest $5 million expansion project.

Five anaerobic digesters are now up and running in a new biogas-to-power facility at the brewery.

The 35 foot tanks were delivered in June from Philadelphia.

The anaerobic digesters will create energy to clean waste water and generate 40 percent of the brewery's electricity.

"We are taking waste water and creating energy out of it," said Nick Matt, Chairman and CEO, F.X. Matt Brewery. "Otherwise it just goes right down the drain and nothing happens to it. That is about as environmentally friendly as you can be."

The project was funded in part by incentives from NYSERDA and National Grid.

This expansion project also includes greenscaping the area around the brewery. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by the 2013 Boilermaker Road Race.
