New initiative offering free cell phones for those in need

(WKTV) - Assurance Wireless, a division of Sprint Nextel and Virgin Mobile, offer free cell phones and 250 minutes per month to people who can't afford to buy one of their own.

The free phone program is funded through a federal law that provides subsidized phone service.

You qualify for the program if you live in New York State and are enrolled in at least one of the following programs:

*Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)
*Food Stamps/SNAP
*Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
*Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
*Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
*The National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program

You can also qualify for the program if your household income is 135 to 150% below the federal poverty level.
