Rome officials urge shopping local for the holidays

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - When you head out to do your holiday shopping, Rome officials hope you'll think of their city first.

The Shop Rome First initiative is designed to keep shoppers in the City of Rome and even attract some out of towners.

The retail committee of the Rome Chamber of Commerce has launched the initiative just in time for the holiday shopping season.

This is the 10th year for the event.

"Shopping locally helps to preserve jobs," said William Guglielmo of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce. "It helps to develop new jobs and brings in very important sales tax money so local government can meet its financial obligations."

Once again this year, the committee is having a treasure hunt that involves many of the stores throughout the Rome area with thousands of dollars worth of prizes.
