300 jobs secured for CNY through energy partnership
CAMDEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - 300 jobs are staying in Central New York thanks to a partnership between the New York State Power Authority and International Wire.
The Camden company uses so much energy that its board of directors wanted to move the operation to South Carolina or Georgia where costs are not as high. $1.8 million is available over a 12 month period to help International Wire get by. A cap is set, and if the energy costs exceed the cap, the New York Power Authority will make up the difference. "If we can use energy...low cost power...to help companies like international wire...that's important," said Richard Kessel of the New York Power Authority. "I didn't feel I could bet these jobs on the oil market or the gas market," said Rodney Kent of International Wire. "These people...I grew up in this town. My father worked in this very building. I operate plants around the world, but this workforce in Central New York is very dear to me." Energy is the third largest line item for International Wire. The company could benefit from the plan for the next two years. |
