Despite a weekend Valentine's Day, business still blooming for flower shops

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Love is in the air this weekend and business is blooming at area flower shops.

Despite the fact that this year's holiday falls on a weekend, one local business owner said flower deliveries are surprisingly steady.

Folks generally want flowers delivered at work, and Valentine's Sunday can be problematic for flower shops. Marilyn Cieko, co-owner of Village Florals in New Hartford, however, said business is on target this year.

Valentine's Day accounts for about four-times as many sales as a regular day and Cieko said she was a little concerned people would opt for weekend getaways or dinners out instead of a dozen red roses.

However, hundreds of flower orders have already been placed and Cieko attributes much of that to this weekend's nice weather.

"The weather is such a big factor," Cieko said. "We have extra drivers this weekend. We are doing so much better compared to some of the other florists down south who have been affected by the weather."

Village Florals has also extended their delivery hours. They will be delivering flowers all weekend, even on Sunday.
