Carl's Furniture City helps tribute concert go on with donation

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The show will go on this weekend for a concert paying tribute to the works of the late Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, thanks to the generous support of a local businessman.

Whether it's ballads, rap, or even poetry, the works of the two artists will be performed for audiences outside of Utica City Hall on Saturday. Although the event has had success in the past, the organizers were in need of a little help when it came to expenses.

That's when Carl Vogel of Carl's Furniture City stepped in on Friday with a check for $475 to help them get by.

"That's going to be going towards expenses that we've incurred in putting this event on and we truly appreciate everybody and anybody that has supported us, especially Carl's Furniture," said event organizer Sabrina Brown-Ingram. "He's been a big supporter of us."

"When I heard the show was in jeopardy, I was so glad that Grady, Frances & Sabrina reached out to us at Carls Furniture City," Vogel said. "It is important that we have programs like this for our youth. I was more than happy to give them the funds they needed to put on the show. I think it's fantastic that Sabrina and her team have come together to do all of this for our young people"

Organizers say the concert did so well following the death of Michael Jackson that they decided to add Whitney Houston to the list. Not only will music fill the air, but organizers say they will be giving a helping hand to children-in-need before they head back to school.

"We're going to combine the school book bag giveaway with this event, so any kids from the area that need school supplies can come down and get school supplies," Brown-Ingram said.

Admission to the concert is free and takes place at Hanna Park in Utica on Saturday from 1 to 7 p.m.
