Elementary students organize pet drive for Herkimer County Humane Society

By HILARY LANE

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Second graders at Remington Elementary School in the Village of Ilion have organized a pet drive to benefit the animals at the Herkimer County Humane Society.

As part of their unit on kindness, the children collected pet food, toys, and monetary donations. Their teacher, Angela Rorick, says the children are learning the importance of giving back, especially during this holiday season.

"The biggest lesson we want kids to learn is to show kindness to others and that includes our animal friends," says Rorick.

A shelter dog named Molly visited the second grade class a few weeks ago. The students learned more about the Herkimer County Humane Society and now their project hits even closer to home.

The money and items the class collected will help feed, bathe, and take care of the animals, like Molly, who live in the shelter.
